A SCENE from Eugene Ionesco's Rhinoceros
Act One p.25 (BOTH)
** A DIALOGUE BETWEEN OLD GENTLEMAN AND LOGICIAN
LOGICIAN [to the Old Gentleman]: Here is an example of a syllogism.
The cat has four paws.
Isidore and Fricot both have four paws.
Therefore Isidore and Fricot are cats.
OLD GENTLEMAN [to the Logician] : My dog has got four paws.
LOGICIAN [to the Old Gentleman]: Then it's a cat.
OLD GENTLEMAN [to the Logician, after deep reflection] : So then logically speaking, my dog must be a cat?
LOGICIAN [to the Old Gentleman]: Logically, yes. But the contrary is also true.
OLD GENTLEMAN [to the Logician] Logic is a very beautiful thing.
LOGICIAN [to the Old Gentleman]: As long as it is not abused.

This particular scene could be interpreted and acted out in many various ways.
It could be a scene of the Logician laughing at and mockering the simple-minded
and unsophisticated character of the Old Man. On the other hand, it could be
a scene of the Old Man being highly critical of and indignant at the Logician's
absurd way of distorting logic.
Or you could have a narrator lead the audience to react and be objectively
critical both of the two characters.
